Unlike the flaky artisan breads found in European countries, Caribbean bread are usually quick to make, basic and solid, but they still pack a flavorful punch. They’re baked and fried (there are even “fried bakes”), and every island has its own take on similar recipes. This list by no means covers all Caribbean breads but it’s a great way to start exploring Caribbean bread bites.

1. Cornmeal Festival

Jamaican Festival is a sweetened, fried dough made with cornmeal as the signature ingredient. When in Jamaica you can find it served with any of your favorite jerk meats. But visit Hellshire or Fort Clarence Beach to have the most authentic version with your freshly caught fried snapper or parrot fish in a beach side shack. Get the recipe…

2. Fried Dumplings

This popular Jamaican side is fit to accompany any meal throughout the day, but it usually enjoyed with breakfast! The dough is made with flour, baking powder and butter, and it’s easy to prep and fry up! Serve it alongside meats or vegetarian entrees, enjoy them as a snack on their own or with a chunk of butter slathered inside. There are other versions of these called “Bakes” found elsewhere in the Caribbean, but for Jamaicans, it’s all about the fried dumplings. Get the recipe…
