A Cuban staple, the Cuban Sandwich features an impressive trifecta of pork, ham, and Cuban bread served warm and toasty. With bread that is a little sweet, pickles that are sour, tangy mustard, and flavorful meats, each bite gives an exciting burst of flavors that will leave you wanting more.
Serves 4
- 1 loaf Cuban bread
- 1/2 lb baked ham (thinly sliced)
- 1/2 lb roast pork (thinly sliced)
- 1/2 lb swiss cheese (thinly sliced)
- Dill pickles (thinly sliced)
- Butter
- Yellow mustard
- Mayonnaise (optional)
- Cut the bread open horizontally and spread butter over the inside.
- Place the pickles along the bottom half of the loaf.
- Layer the roast pork on top of the pickles. Spread some mustard on top of the pork.
- Place the ham slices on top of the roast pork. Spread some mayonnaise on top of the ham, if desired.
- Place the slices of Swiss cheese on top of the ham. Press the loaf closed and cut into 4 sandwiches.
- Using a sandwich press, grill the sandwich 2 to 3 minutes on each side, pressing down while grilling. The bread should be lightly toasted and the cheese melted.
- Slice each sandwich in half diagonally, and serve hot.
- If you can’t find Cuban bread at your local grocery or ethnic food store, French bread can be used as a substitute.
