A spicy and sweet Jamaican holiday beverage that packs a healthy punch, made with the Sorrel flower. High in vitamins, minerals, and powerful antioxidants, Sorrel may just help you stay healthy through the holidays.
Celebrate the holidays Jamaican-style with some festive Jamaican Sorrel (known elsewhere as Hibiscus), a spicy, sweet, tart traditional holiday beverage that tastes great and has some awesome anti-oxidants!
Yields 10
- 2 ½ cups dried sorrel
- 3 oz fresh ginger, grated
- 5 pimento berries
- 10 cups boiling water
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- ¾ cup white rum
- Place sorrel, ginger and pimento berries in a large mixing bowl or pot
- Pour boiling water over the ingredients
- Stir and leave overnight to steep
- Strain the liquid into another container to remove solid ingredients
- Press along the strainer with a spoon to squeeze out extra liquid
- Add sugar, lemon juice and rum to sorrel and stir until sugar has dissolved
- Pour over ice and enjoy!
- To keep Sorrel drink from fermenting, store in the fridge or cold cellar.
