Drink to Dessert – A Haitian Meal
Share
If you’re in the mood for a meat dish that has simple but robust flavor, then try Haitian Tasso Beouf. Using flank steak or pot roast, cut into strips, marinate and dry the meat. While the garlic and spices lend a typical island richness, it is the addition of fresh sour orange and lime juices to the marinade that brightens the taste of this entrée. Very few Caribbean dinner plates are complete without a side of rice. Djon Djon Rice is a uniquely Haitian delicacy made with black djon djon mushrooms, grown in the north of the island. It is very popular in the Haitian community at home and abroad. Along with Griot (fried pork), it’s one of the signature dishes of Haiti. Try this classic djon djon rice recipe.
And now for dessert! This Pen Patat, sweet potato pudding, is a perfect way to wrap up our gastronomic escapade. Caribbean sweet potatoes, a purple skinned, white fleshed version of sweet potatoes otherwise called boniatos, are used abundantly in Haiti. Infused with banana, sugar, spices and butter, the result is a sturdy, thick, heavy dessert that’s great with breakfast, lunch or dinner. Serve it hot or cold on its own or with ice cream.
